Halo 3 ODST Full Campaign Walkthrough
by Team Respawn
A four-player co-op walkthrough of Halo 3: ODST (MCC version), recorded January 31, 2024 — roughly seven months after their previous session. The hosts consider it one of the best Halo games made, praising its focused single-city setting, jazz/piano soundtrack, and the spin-off format that lets it do something different from the mainline entries.
General Mechanics & Observations
- Grenade throw: Unique in the series — grenades go where your reticle is aimed on the horizontal plane, not where you're looking vertically. You must aim directly at the target.
- Health system: No shields in the traditional sense — the equivalent is called "stamina." You still have a secondary health layer underneath.
- Grenades: ODSTs can only carry 3 grenades instead of the usual 4.
- Night vision: Toggle with X (default layout). The on-screen prompt to use it stops appearing after the first two missions.
- Pistol: Consistently praised as the best pistol in the series. The SMG also holds up well.
- Scale: ODST does a great job making the player feel smaller — Brutes appear noticeably larger and more imposing than in other Halo games.
- Open world: ODST is technically the first open-world Halo game, predating Infinite by over a decade. The Mombasa Streets hub connects all missions.
Achievements Overview
- The majority of achievements are tied to collecting ~30 audio logs scattered across Mombasa Streets.
- Important: You must actually listen to the audio log for the achievement to unlock — picking it up is not enough.
- Audio logs are best collected between the second-to-last and the final mission, as not all spawn until that window.
- Notable non-audio achievements include: completing a level without using Covenant weapons; keeping specific marines alive; killing 5 sleeping Grunts; Engineer-related kills (either 0 or 20); riding a Banshee; getting a Rocket Launcher to Dare; beating par scores on each mission.
- Panda challenge: There is a realistic-picture panda easter egg in the environment — looking at it unlocks a campaign challenge.
Mombasa Streets (Hub)
The open hub connecting all missions. Medical kiosks provide health. Ringing phones mark audio log locations. Navigation is notoriously poor — described as "worse than Apple maps."
Easter Eggs
- A Destiny poster featuring The Traveler can be found — Bungie was already working on Destiny during ODST's development.
- Multiple Halo: Reach easter eggs are present, as Reach was in development concurrently.
- A Marty O'Donnell easter egg is hidden in one of the outdoor areas.
Mission 1 – Tayari Plaza
- Squad is separated at the start. The Rookie begins alone and must navigate to teammates.
- Achievement: Look at a specific group of marines ("the boys") to trigger dialogue and unlock an achievement. Just approach and face them.
- Jackal on second floor: There's a Jackal in an early building who reliably kills players — clear it before pushing.
- Hunters appear near the end. Use Spikers when available; hitting them in the back is the key weak point.
Uplift Reserve
Heavy vehicle mission. Warthog is the primary vehicle throughout.
- Banshees are a major threat and will tear apart the Warthog if ignored.
- Banshee tip: You cannot jack Banshees in ODST — you must kill the pilot first to bring it down.
- Plasma Pistol is important for overcharging Banshees/Wraiths; keep one stocked.
- The Spartan Laser appears on this map and is highly effective.
- Multiple Scorpion tanks are available in later sections; use them against Wraiths.
Kizingo Boulevard
Street-level Scorpion tank mission — four-player chaos described as "payback time."
- Two Scorpions are available.
- Achievement: Hijack a Banshee on this mission. You must kill the pilot to bring it down first.
- Banshee bombing runs: Strategy: stun it repeatedly with a Plasma Pistol while someone else finishes it off.
ONI Alpha Site
Mission involves defending the ONI building; Dare gets abducted during a cutscene.
- Spartan Lasers are available and recommended.
- Mickey reveal: Mickey is confirmed as the traitor in this mission — working with the insurgency/rebels, not the Covenant.
- Lore note: The rebels/insurgency are still active and appear later in Halo 5 on Meridian.
NMPD HQ
Multi-floor urban building clearance.
- Marines in ODST are mortal and matter — killing them is noted as something missing from newer Halo games.
- Engineers: On this mission you either kill none or aim for 20+ for the achievement split.
- Elevator navigation is required toward the end.
- Lore note on Engineers: In Halo Wars 2, Engineers appear enslaved by the Banished, which explains why they were fighting alongside the Covenant.
Kikowani Station
Banshee-heavy section; one of the few missions where aerial combat is central.
- Banshee mechanic unique to ODST: Banshees can come to a complete stop mid-air.
- To perform Banshee maneuvers, use your jump button (not the exit-vehicle button).
- Anti-air turrets on the ground will shoot down Banshees — clear them to maintain air superiority.
Data Hive
The "obligatory bug mission" every Halo game includes.
- Achievement: Bring a Rocket Launcher to Dare. Swap her pistol for rockets, then swap back — wait a few seconds for the achievement to register.
- Features the Superintendent (Virgil) as a key story element.
Coastal Highway (Final Mission)
A high-speed highway chase with Warthogs and Mongooses, escorting Virgil the Engineer.
- Virgil mechanics: He generates a shield around himself that absorbs damage. He only knows gas — no brakes. He plows through cars and obstacles with no hesitation.
- A Scarab appears in this mission — stationary, taken down with a Scorpion. Noted as the easiest Scarab fight in the series because it cannot move.
- Lore note: The space elevator is what fell earlier in the game's story.
Overall Notes
- Spin-off quality: The hosts consistently argue ODST and Reach are better than the mainline 343-era entries. The focused scope, grounded tone, and single-location setting are all cited as strengths.
- Firefight: Several campaign maps double as Firefight maps. Sergeant Avery Johnson is a playable Firefight character.
- Story vs. Halo 3: ODST is praised for its tighter character work. Halo 3 is described as a great game but primarily a "shoot-em-up" that sidelines most supporting characters.
