Goblin Commander: Unleash the Horde Full Campaign Walkthrough

by Team Respawn

A solo playthrough of the full campaign of Goblin Commander: Unleash the Horde (2003, PS2/Xbox/GameCube), played via PS2 emulation on a Steam Deck with an Xbox controller. The host is a childhood fan of the game and considers it a severely underappreciated console RTS, praising its innovative control scheme and the variety of its goblin clans. The campaign spans five acts and introduces a new enemy clan in each act.

Core Mechanics & Systems

  • Clan control: Each clan is bound to a face button (X, Square, etc.). Pressing the button selects that clan; units then move and attack on command. You can control units like a traditional RTS or switch to direct/third-person control using the analog sticks.
  • Titans: Super units, one per clan. Must be directly controlled. Each has a unique ability — the Stone Crusher Titan can eat enemies to restore health, making it the strongest. Hellfire and Stormbringer Titans are weaker by comparison. Only one Titan can exist at a time.
  • Soul Fountains: Capture points that generate souls over time (similar to resource nodes in Halo Wars 2). Position your clan next to one until it turns blue. Soul flow slows to a trickle over time but never stops.
  • Gold: Earned by destroying environmental objects (rocks, barrels, structures). Does not regenerate — finite per map. Should be used for clan upgrades before turrets.
  • Clan Shrines: Your main production building. Trains units and unlocks upgrades. Can be destroyed by enemies. Repair cost is 25 gold (may increase per destruction).
  • Upgrades: Purchasable from the Clan Shrine. Visually reflected on your units — equipment turns gold at max level. Upgrade clans fully before spending gold on turrets.
  • Turrets (Rock Lobbers): Placed on the map for static defense. Limited by available gold. You can only build one of each type. Cannot be built on all maps.
  • Drummer Unit: A special support unit that actively heals nearby units during combat. Sound is synchronized to the drumming animation — a noted detail for a 2003 game. Considered a must-have. Appears to heal multiple clan types.
  • Rune Stones: Leader powers picked up from the map or purchased at the Alchemist Shop. Two can be carried at once (L2 and R2). Powers include healing, meteor strike, freeze, fog-of-war clear, earthquake, and more. Only 10 gold each at the shop.
  • Waypoints / Queue: Hold L1 to queue up movement waypoints. Useful for sending units on a path while you manage another clan.
  • Moon Gates: Teleporters. Either clan can use them regardless of color. Master Moon Gates teleport your units to linked locations on the map.
  • D-pad navigation: Up returns to base; Down returns to your last position. Considered forward-thinking for a console RTS.
  • Unit stats at mission end: Game tracks units built, units killed, and units lost per mission.

Clan Overview

Clan Color Role Special Unit
Stone Crusher Gray/White Melee tank, all-around Pit Boss (high HP/damage), Drummer (healer)
Hellfire Red Ranged/anti-infantry Chainsaw infantry, archers, gunpowder units
Stormbringer Blue Armor buffs, lightning Wind Mage (armor/vision), Lightning Titan
Plague Spitter Purple Acid/ranged Witch Doctor, Bombardier
Night Horde Dark — (unlocked late)

Recommended compositions:

  • Stone Crusher: Heavy melee (Pit Boss) + Drummer for sustain
  • Hellfire: Ranged-heavy (gunpowder hunters > archers at max upgrade)
  • Split roles: Stone Crusher as frontline tank, Hellfire as ranged DPS from behind

Act 1 — Tutorial / Stone Crusher Introduction

Mission 1 (Tutorial — The Cave)

  • Introduces direct unit control, gold collection from destructibles, and Titan mechanics.
  • Stone Crusher Titan introduced — eat enemies to restore health; objective is to clear critters from the room.
  • To have a clan follow the Titan: press L1, then double-tap the clan's face button.

Mission 2 (Tutorial — Base Building)

  • Introduces the Clan Shrine, unit production, and Soul Fountains.
  • Upgrade visuals explained: equipment colors change through tiers, turning gold at max.
  • Rock Lobber turrets introduced; must be placed on glowing orbs.
  • Gold is finite on the map — upgrade your clan before building turrets.

Act 1 — Hellfire Clan Conflict

Mission 1 — First Contact (Hellfire)

  • First outdoor mission; make contact with the Hellfire Clan.
  • Objective: find the lumber encampment and destroy it.
  • Rune Stones introduced — found scattered on the map; L2/R2 to activate.
  • The Meteor Strike rune stone used to demolish the lumber camp.
  • Gold chests hidden around maps provide large lump sums.

Mission 2 — Gunpowder Factory

  • Investigate the Hellfire Clan's gunpowder factory.
  • Multiple Soul Fountains available; capture as many as possible for sustained income.
  • Hellfire Clan: strong anti-infantry, specializes in ranged attacks (archers, chainsaw infantry).
  • Chainsaw units are strong anti-infantry.
  • Barrels on the map will blow up your units — avoid hitting them.
  • Mission ends when the factory area is cleared; somewhat abrupt conclusion.

Mission 3 — Grax's Fortress

  • Grax is the Hellfire Clan leader.
  • Enemy can destroy your Clan Shrine buildings — they don't respawn, just disappear.
  • Captured enemy turrets can be turned against them (position commander over turret, press Triangle).
  • Scorched earth strategy: destroy all environmental objects on the way in for maximum gold.
  • Stone Crusher Titan's "eat" mechanic lets you out-sustain turret fire by continuously eating enemies.

Act 2 — Stormbringer Clan

Mission 1 — Investigate (Two Clans Unlocked)

  • Hellfire Clan added to your roster (Square button). Now controlling two clans simultaneously.
  • Moon Gates introduced as teleporters — either clan can use either gate.
  • Objective: find and hold the Observatory and a Moon Gate for four full-moon cycles (~5 minutes).
  • Split the clans: Hellfire defends the lower Moon Gate; Stone Crusher holds the Observatory.
  • No turrets can be built on this map.
  • Recommended mix: heavy melee (Pit Boss) for Stone Crusher, ranged units for Hellfire.
  • Destroying lamps in the environment disables nearby traps.

Mission 2 — Stormbringer Counterattack

  • Defend against Stormbringer assaults and capture the master Moon Gate to the north.
  • Lightning tower enemies (like mini-titans) can wipe an entire clan — retreat immediately if spotted.
  • Hellfire Titan unlocked during this mission.
  • Teleporting behind enemy lines via captured Moon Gate is effective.

Mission 3 — Thunderdome

  • Objectives: destroy lightning generator, wind turbine, and rain collector.
  • Lightning strike environmental hazards can randomly kill units — frustrating but unavoidable.
  • Enemy Stormbringer Titan: spinning tornado unit. Treat as a priority target.
  • Scorched earth approach works well; destroy all structures for gold before pushing.
  • Once all three generators are destroyed, the path into Fane's Fortress opens.

Mission 4 — Fane's Fortress (Final Stormbringer Mission)

  • Fight into the Stormbringer stronghold.
  • Enemy has multiple production buildings — locate and destroy all to stop unit waves.
  • Lens Cannon turret is highly effective in this mission.
  • Once all production buildings fall, the Stormbringer Clan is defeated.

Act 3 — Plague Spitter Clan

Mission 1 — Soul Fountain Poisoning

  • Soul Fountains start tainted (red/corrupted) — can't be used until cleaned.
  • Find Soul Caches (one-time loot pickups) to get souls in lieu of fountains early on.
  • Drummer is critical for sustain — prioritize building one.
  • Objective: find what's polluting the Soul Fountains.

Mission 2 — Plague Spitter Territory

  • Plague Spitter units use acid attacks and are visually distinct (purple).
  • Four clan shrines must be destroyed across the map to stop enemy production.
  • Hellfire clan recaptured/rejoined during this mission.
  • Soul Fountains become available once areas are cleared.
  • Plague Spitter production buildings are spread far apart — scout the full map.

Mission 3 — The Hive (Three Slimes Boss)

  • Objective: kill three large slimes scattered around the map.
  • Slimes can absorb units and move; engage with full army and retreat to avoid attrition.
  • No Soul Fountains on this map — manage souls carefully.
  • Gather 300 gold and deliver to the Wise One's hovel (northeast corner) to unlock new intel.

Act 4 — Plague Spitter Stronghold

Mission 1 — Sissi's Hive Entrance

  • Limited starting units; must rebuild economy quickly.
  • Objective: find a way into the hive.
  • Purple teleporters usable by any clan — navigate through them to access new areas.
  • Moon Gates connect to different sections of the map.

Mission 2 — Crops and Harvesting Encampment

  • Destroy Plague Spitter crop fields (the harvesting encampment).
  • Enemy spawns from multiple bases — find and destroy all three production buildings to stop waves.
  • Hellfire Clan gunpowder hunters (max ranged upgrade) are the strongest ranged unit in the game.
  • Large number of enemies but manageable with focused clan composition.

Mission 3 — Kill the Three Slimes (Act Boss)

  • Three giant slimes must be hunted and killed across the map.
  • Slimes walk and can absorb units — mass your army and all-in each one.
  • Once all three are killed, the Plague Spitter Clan is defeated.

Act 5 — Final Act (All Clans)

Mission 1 — Securing Resources

  • Night Horde Clan introduced as a fifth playable faction.
  • Pressure plate mechanic: feed the slime by hovering near it, then bring it to the plate.
  • Purple teleporters are navigable by any clan.
  • Objective: find and activate the pressure plate.

Mission 2 — Cripple the Great Machine

  • All four clans available.
  • No Soul Fountains initially — economy is tight early.
  • Enemy has multiple production buildings scattered around a large map — destroy them all to stop waves.
  • Turrets can be built on this map; use them to defend the Clan Shrine.
  • Once all enemy production buildings are destroyed, the objective completes.
  • Recommended: use Hellfire hunters (max damage) as primary DPS; Stone Crusher as frontline tank.

Mission 3 — Final Mission (Destroy the Detonators)

Hardest mission in the game. 30-minute time limit. Five detonators must be disabled across the map; each is guarded by one of the five opposing clans.

  • Focus upgrades and population on Stone Crushers (Pit Boss + Drummer).
  • Keep moving — do not over-invest time clearing buildings.
  • Ignore most enemy units unless they directly block progress.
  • Use Moon Gates to teleport between detonator locations quickly.
  • Detonators are accessed via ramps leading to teleporters; once you reach the console, it disables automatically.
  • After all five detonators are destroyed, the game ends via cutscene.

General Tips

  • Scorched earth early: Destroy every destructible object on the way to objectives for maximum gold income.
  • Upgrade clans before building turrets — gold is finite and turret spending can lock you out of upgrades.
  • Drummer is mandatory — the active heal during combat dramatically improves survivability.
  • Stone Crusher Titan is the best Titan — health regen via eating enemies makes it self-sustaining.
  • Don't split armies too thin early — combined arms (all clans together) is more effective than spread engagement.
  • When under attack at home: leave one clan to defend; push with the others.
  • Soul Fountains trump everything — capturing and holding them is the primary economic priority.
  • Attack-move behavior: units will stop to fight anything in their path. If you need to reach a destination quickly, manually path around enemies.
